Amazon's mechanical turk

Heard about this website on Leo Laporte's radio show. I was intrigued by the concept and thought this is the ultimate in flattening the economic world.
Basically Mechanical Turk is a website run by Amazon that quotes tasks globally for very small money. People bid on doing the tasks and after it is completed they get paid electronically.
I do not know where Amazon is going with this but I feel it is going to take off. Many Mom and Pop shops will take many simple electronic tasks (sorting, tagging, etc) and use the service instead of hiring a local person ~ for example summer teens. I think this is a totally flattening of the world of business. The issue is to break down jobs into small tasks - after that is done and posted on the site, it is only a matter of time before someone in a lower economic area will do the job. I think nothing can be done about this site - it is the evolution of business.. Always get the lowest task done for the lowest amount.

Mooninite T-shirt

Mooninite Party

I did not want this blog to be that "political" but I am going to share my feelings about the whole Boston reaction to the Mooninite invasion.
I think in this after 9/11 world we live in sure, our guard has to be up. but I can not understand the reaction of the city of Boston and the police department after they got the first mooninite down. I was thinking they would put the alert in a "yello" mode instead of still scaring the city to death. Why would they ever think that "terrorists" would put up fake one's and real ones up in the city? I think that the city was embarrassed by the whole thing and then got really defensive. You know when someone trips on the sidewalk and instead of laughing about how they were not paying attention they look back in disgust at the sidewalk like it was someone else's fault for them falling.
During this whole episode I feel all the crazyness after they found the first one was totally reacting to be embarrassed.
The big thing is that we looked like idiots to the entire world - a city that over reacted to the internet generation. This photo sums up what other people think of the fine city of Boston...

Meghan and the dogs..

Reggie and Bella are part of the family. Even though they are annoying they can always make me laugh. We got both of the them from the Sterling shelter and they have been rescued from the streets of Puerto Rico.
We have heard all the jokes (do they understand English), but it makes us feel nice that we helped two poor dogs and allow them to live a life of Riley in Groton..

Frank's 50th Birthday bash

My oldest cousin had his 50th birthday party this weekend. It was a blues brothers theme party and the two impersonators he hired (photo) were incredible. They sang all the songs and looked the part. My cousin works at Salisbury Dodge City and is a local celebrity by doing the TV commercials.
One reason he wanted to though a party is it is rare to get the entire family together these days except for funerals and a birthday party is much better celebration.

I have been a big fan of Leo Laporte way back in the tech tv days. I was once even mentioned on the show "The Screen Savers" when I recommended a cool shareware program.
Now Leo is the king of podcasting and tech radio god. A few weeks ago his weekend radio show was picked up on channel 152 on XM on the weekends. Now I can listen to him in the car radio and not just my Ipod.

Google Map - My Maps..

I was playing around with the new feature in google maps called "my maps". What you can do is save maps with your own group of locations. I thought a good test would be trying to map out all my trips last year. Here is the final result link..

Using Google Maps to locate places

Originally uploaded by frisard.
I have been interested for a while the concept of graphing locations. In my job we have many databases of customers that would be great to show as a map. Well Google has made this process very easy. This link is one I just made with over 1000 hydro plants in the US with very little effort.

What am I listening to these days..

As you can tell by the video above, I like "The Fray". In my mind they came out of nowhere and now you can not go very long listening to the radio without hearing them. This song, "Over my head" just reminds me of high school and the need to take chances. I also love their anti suicide song "How to save a life". This song talks about what TRUE friends do when a friend is in a bad place.

songs
- Over my head
- How to save a life

Well I am still on a major Ben Folds kick. I am going to see him this summer in the Boston Garden with John Mayer. I just got his DVD that he did on My Space. Very cool like everything he does.

songs
- Landed
- There's Always Someone Cooler Than You
- Hiro's Song

Kanye West is one of the most interesting guy on the planet. I would not consider myself a big rap guy but his lyrics and funny style make me laugh. I think he is very creative and has a good message in his music about taking risks and believing in yourself.

songs
- we don't care
- Roses
- Hey mama

The Tragically Hip have become a fav of my also. I first got into them when I heard them called the REM of Canada. Well, they have been around for many years and I would love to see them in concert but have not been lucky enough to see them.

songs
- New Orleans Is Sinking
- Music@Work
- Poets
- Emperor Penguin

Dogs scrapbook using Scrapblog.com

"Scrapbooking" is very big as seen from DIY TV and such. Also stores are popping up in malls all over America. Well I found this site today that allows you to make online scrap books using your photos. It has a simple engine and really easy to use - just point to your photos on flickr or other online photos places and you are off to the races.
The only things I did not like is the time it takes to make one of these scrapbooks (about 5+ minutes) and that I could not export it into my blog directly with code. But it did have a function to upload into your Flickr account and from there you can run it as a sideshow. Here is my creation (on flickr) Here it is on Scrapblog.com...

Went to Red Sox's game

inside park from seats
Originally uploaded by frisard.
It has been 7 years since I went to a Red Sox game. I am a huge baseball fan and I love going to games except the red sox. Fenway is, in my opinion, a very old stadium that is located in the heart of the city neighborhood where it is hard to get to and to park. Sure tourist are excited to go the first time and all but after that the allure wears off.
About the stadium:
- Liked the new Yankey way entrance to the ballpark. Street vendors and easy access to your seats.
- Seats are still totally uncomfortable. We had great seats (loge section 150) but the seats were not very wide and were not angled to home plate like other stadiums.
- Wires and pipes everywhere - Fenway park is too old to keep up. The new owners talks about their great upgrading of the park is highly exaggerated in my opinion. LInes to bathrooms, pipes and wires everywhere. Maybe it is because I have been to many newer ballparks but this place seems like a dump.
- Over advertising. Everything had an ad on it. Way more then most ballparks.
Here is a link to the photos I took.

Last August I took Meghan and Christina into Boston to accomplish a lofty goal: walk the entire freedom trail. The 2.5 mile trip goes from Park Street station to the bunker hill monument. We stopped at every place and took a picture.
It was a great way to end the summer and I feel everyone had a great time.

Movies to put on list

Vendetta1
Originally uploaded by frisard.
I saw "V for Vendetta" last week and I am still thinking about it. I guess with all the changes we have had in our country since 9/11 you can see how a government can slowly take away rights until you are in George Orwell's 1984.
the plot was gripping to me and I am glad i saw it on cable with a DVR so I could stop and rewind to make sure I kept up with who is who. This movie was done by the guys who did the matrix movies and this is no sophomore slump. I give it a big thumbs up.
I also saw Cameron Crowe's "Elizabethtown" last night. I have loved most of his movies. My top three have to be the following:
- Jerry McGuire (I know, I just loved this movie)
- Fast Times at Ridgemont high
- Say Anything (Kickboxing, the sport of the future)

Well this movie made me laugh. I really enjoyed the way it flowed and how everything fits together. I think most critics panned it but I would defiantly recommend it as a good rental.

Right now the area is been in a flood alert and many towns are in tough shape.

Trip to NYC-Carnegie Deli

Carnegie Deli
Originally uploaded by frisard.
Went to the world famous Carnegie Deli in New York this weekend. We had a fantastic time and I am still full 2 days later. On the menu it states that it costs $3 to share a plate, next time I would take that anytime based on how large the sandwiches are.
I will make it a point to visit every time I am in the big apple.

Trip to NYC-Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium
Originally uploaded by frisard.
Yes, we were at one of the best comeback games of the year - A-rod hit a 3 run home run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Can baseball get any better!
Now one thing you realize real fast is Yankee Stadium is no Fenway. First, the food options are much better (here is New York style pizza). Their bathroom situation seemed better (no lines). They also know when to build!
They are building the new Yankee stadium right next door - it will be much nicer and have that close feel like Camden yards.
The photo here is the grounds crew doing "YMCA" from the village people. You would never see that at Fenway again - people are way to uptight.
My top 3 reasons Yankee Stadium over Fenway:
3) The people - Yankee fans are not stuck up and they care only about baseball. Sure it might not be as POSH as Fenway, but the people are genuine.
2) The price and availability of tickets - You can still get tickets and afford to bring the family. Fenway that goal is out of reach for most people.
1) The 26 world Champion flags help block the sun from your eyes.

I have seen many cool web 2.0 sites that I can really see a good use for business, this one is the best. It is like a whiteboard that many people can see and write to all at the same time. It also is good for creating fish-bone diagrams and really brainstorm over multiple sites.
I have used it a few times and will be continue to use it. It says it is still in Beta and I have no idea if they are planning on charging down the road (or go with an advertising model).

Mexican Sales Meeting

Originally uploaded by frisard.
I was chosen to speak about Mechanical Packing at our Mexican Sales Meeting this year held in Huatulco, Mexico. It was a great meeting and I had some really good discussions about how we are going to grow the business more in Mexico. By the way, Mexico was the largest growing country / region for our company in 2006 - a real honor.
We stayed at the Gala Hotel; it was very nice and an all inclusive. That will defiantly help in the expenses area.
Here are some more pictures I took on my trip.
