Visited this museum this week. I did not have very high expectations of the museum ~ I thought it would be like the Portland Maine museum of art. Portland was very sparse compared to the MFA or the Peabody Essex.
Worcester was no Portland; It had some great pieces including a few impressionists and many Sargent's After walking through I also had a better feeling for Worcester - it is a really nice city with a some really great cultural places.
The museum website also shows all the pieces very well ~ worth checking out. Nice day trip during the summer - I will be going back that is for sure.

Google adds street view to maps

As you know I love Google maps and really like mash-ups. Well a few days ago Google has added street views to its maps. For now it is only in a few cities (San Fran, NYC, Denver (?), and Miami). Basically someone from Google drove all the streets with a panoramic camera on the roof and sync'ed it with GPS locations.
At this link is the exact location where my family had an "in and out" Burger in San Fran last December. It is way cool feature that has once again changed the way we look at maps.

John Hodgman as PC Guy

I just read on the laughing squid that at this years Apple development conference this week they started the show with John Hodgman (PC guy) dressed as Steve Jobs. I searched the internet to see if I could find it but all I found was last years bit (see above). Putting my marketing hat on, Apple has hit a home run with these apple commercials. The golden rule is you laugh and you remember the hook and the product. 5 year olds get the whole concept that PC's are a pain and Macs are easy. The gig is so popular they started a UK version. Also there are many "spoofs" (my favorite on Linux). Another fact about these commercials is how a-typical the mac guy is - he just comes off so "snorky" like very Mac guy I ever met.
While we are on it, you got to remember the old "switch" commercials also from apple.
*** - update: I found this years video:

Job satisfaction

Working as a teacher is one hard job. But the majority of teachers have a real passion for molding young minds. Today I saw this video on youtube about being a teacher and his passion came right through the monitor. The guy is quite talented and has done many other videos on youtube. Worth checking out:

I just listened to a great podcast that was a lecture from Steven Johnson. He is one of the most prominent science writers of our time and his latest book is about how the cholera outbreak of 1854 was solved by Dr. Snow. Conventional wisdom of the day thought the "Ebola" like disease passed from person to person but Dr. Snow thought it was from the water. He did not have a microscope to see the problem but he mapped out the outbreak and it leads to the problem at the pump.
I am going to run out and get the book - very interesting.
He also discusses his other books about video game play. He wrote this great article for the NYT about the new Spore game.
Here is a link of the guy talking about his book.

Well I just read a great article in the New York Times about Fantasy baseball and it really hits home. It talks about how it got started with a sports writer back in 1980.
Here is a copy of the article.
Of course I keep on-line graphs of how my team is going - here is where you can see that.

First REM show

One thing I found of real interest was the summary of the first REM show I ever saw. Back on May 3rd, 1985 I was hanging with a friend of mine from White Hall at my college (Northeastern) freshman year. He got a call from his best friend from high school who was at MIT. He told him to get over there because his frat was running security for a concert tonight and he can get us in free and first. The name of the band was REM.
Well I did not know them from a hole in the wall but I was blown away with the music and the show. Here is a review from the MIT newspaper back then.
