Article on pump packing

This article is from the trenches. You can tell that the plant that this guy worked at has some of the worst pump packing procedures and falls for all the bad maintenance practices.
The article does point out one of the major issues of sleeve damage by over compression of packing. Also he touches on the moving of the lantern ring causing more problems.

Bolting DA System

BOLTINGC
Originally uploaded by frisard.
A long time ago when I was really into data acquisition I built this bolting demonstration unit. It basically would show how a gasket creeps and bolting interaction. It was a great tool and since it was digital it would calculate the % bolt load loss over time.
I carried this unit to many places over the globe showing customers how important good bolting practices are to archive long joint sealing life.

PBI Fiber

Once again Wikipedia has a great report on fibers. This time the subject is PBI fiber. Some packing companies use this fiber in valve packing. One interesting thing is it is not good for chemical resistance. It is good for high temperature and has been used as welding apparel and fireman equipment.
I do not know from this writeup how it works as a pump or valve packing.

Found this nice page on the web about how carbon fibers are made. It goes into quite a bit of detail on the manufacturing process and who did what.

Bagged emissions readings

For a long time I have always known that it is hard to compare PPM leakage to volumetric leakage. We always try to not get involved in the debate and I have seen many people with PHD's fight over this subject. Well I found this good report from the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) on this subject.
The report focused on using a portable optical gas imaging device (CO2 laser) as it compared to the old PPM.
Here is a good excerpt:
" In all cases, the calculated mass rate were several orders of magnitude larger than the bagging results. Bagging results show the smallest detected leak had a mass emissions rate of 5.63E-07 kg/hr, compared to a correlated mass rate five orders of magnitude higher at 0.012 kg/hr."

Low load / low area gasket design

gasket
Originally uploaded by frisard.
Saw this patent on how to use good but high seating stress gasket materials on low load flanges (glass lined, etc). It had a few interesting designs that still allow you to center with bolt holes but are very low seating area. I do not know if this patent took off but it is interesting.

Wind power from a kite

I have been interested in wind power for a while now and I have seen some of the large wind farms out in eastern Washington state, so this idea is right out of left field. This article in the Economist (saw this on boing-boing) talks about a flying kite that will generate power for less money then regular power. the guy who is behind this idea is no slouch , the article says he use to break codes in WWII.
A very interesting read - who knows, this could solve a lot of problems.

Flange Live loading testing

A long time ago (1998) I presented a paper on flange springs at a Fluid Sealing Association symposium. This photo was taken when we put the flanges in a massive temperature swing (from the oven to dry ice!) to demonstrate the benefit of flange live load with a loss of seating stress.
When I was creating the abstract for the paper I wanted to use actual flanges and not focus on gasket specimens like most paper did on the subject. I also tried to make my "powerpoint" look cool ~ of course that was cool for 1998 where no one could of imagined the size of files today.
Here is the paper.

Canadian fugitive Emissions Handbook

Originally uploaded by frisard.
Found this really recent (1/07) handbook by the Canadian Petroleum Producers. It goes into detail how to start a emissions team at a plant from soup to nuts. This is a sample leak tag that can be used to capture all the needed info when a leak is detected.
Also they explain how they use EPA method 21 as their bible for emissions measurement. Overall not a bad document as reference of what they are doing in the great white north.
With all the tar sand business growing it is a good feeling they are on top of using modern sealing techniques.
